All about ceiling fans

Until a few years ago, I wore soft contact lenses and couldn’t stand being in a room with a ceiling fan. Thankfully, I no longer wear contacts but have reached that wonderful age where I can’t live (comfortably) without a ceiling fan. I now know, first hand, the difference between a good-looking fan that costs a little and a good-looking fan that costs a little more.

After recently moving into our new home, my impatient “other half” purchased a couple of really nice-looking, inexpensive fans from the local “home center” since I couldn’t decide which ones to order from the line we sell. Not only do I have to leave “his” fans on high in order to feel a breeze, but I just know that they are going to wobble themselves out of the ceiling any day now! All of the fans I have purchased from Monte Carlo, including the ones with the same motor size as “his” fans, do not wobble and provide excellent air movement.

Below are some guidelines to help you choose the best fan for your room.

For the best air movement choose a fan with a 14º blade pitch and a motor size of at least 188mm x 20mm. This will move about 8,000 cubic feet or more of air per minute. Precision bearings provide the lowest resistance for the quietest fans. Monte Carlo uses only stainless steel roller bearings of quality carbon steel.

Fans with a 172mm x 14mm motor and 12º blade pitch will provide good air movement while a 53mm x 14mm or 153mm x 15mm motor and 11º blade pitch will provide medium air movement. 153mm x 12mm or 153mm x 13mm motors generate very little discernible air movement at all however, in a really small room they may still provide enough for comfort.

Other elements such as RPM’s (revolutions per minute), the shape of the blade and its composition may also affect the cooling effect of the fan. Highly decorative fans like the banana or palm leaf style wood blades typically produce a gentle breeze, even on high. It’s most important to find out how many CFM’s (cubic feet per minute) the fan is capable of moving and the quality of the construction. The best made fans will not only give the best performance, but will last for many years.

The cheaper fans I own from the “home center” have the same motor size and blade pitch as the 2 Monte Carlo fans I purchased here. I paid more for the fans we sell, but the construction is far superior and that makes all the difference in the world.

Great Rooms

Great Rooms are the warmest, most inviting room of the house. The selection of the correct ceiling fan for this area will set the mood as well as add comfort and style to your home. Great rooms require larger fans. Choose from 56'' to 72'' ceiling fans for a welcoming breeze. Don't forget to choose the correct downrod length and sloped ceiling adapter to assure proper hanging of this fixture.

Large Rooms 15' x 15'

Large rooms can be easily styled by selection of the right ceiling fan. Choose 52'' to 56'' ceiling fans that will help provide a cooling breeze.

Small Rooms 10' x 10'

Small Rooms need cooling breezes as much as any room in your home. Select 38'' to 48'' ceiling fans to assure a perfect fit.

Small Spaces - Utility

Small spaces and utility rooms can be difficult. Monte Carlo can assure the perfect fit with their 24'' to 34'' ceiling fans. Don't forget to use a flush mount adapter in situations where ceiling height may be an issue.

Outdoor

When using a fan that is exposed to the elements make sure to choose a fan rated for wet or damp locations. The choice of a Monte Carlo outdoor fan will assure your fan investment will hold up to the elements year after year.

Low Ceilings

Low Ceilings can be difficult when a ceiling fan is needed. Monte Carlo has a wide selection of motor and blade finishes in our Hugger Collection that will help you cool every room.
